Property Description

The pride in ownership is outstanding in this Premier Charles Village Home.
2629 Guilford Avenue was constructed in 1907 by architect Jacob Gerwig and builders Joseph Pentz and Frank O Singer. Jacob Gerwig was born in Howard County Maryland in 1857. Gerwig was known as a favorite architect of the Peabody Heights Company and designed 40 bay-window porch front homes in the neighborhood between 1905 and 1919.

Gerwigs homes are known for their fine interior wood detailing. As seen in every room in the house! 2629 Guilford Avenue, built shortly after the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904, was designed with a faux fireplace in the front receiving room. Each of Gerwigs homes on the 2600 block of Guilford Ave were adorned with a pair of whimsical plaster faces in the entry vestibule, which have been maintained till this day. The front faade of 2629 guilford ave is composed of a material coined iron spot brick, a much harder brink than the locally produced soft red brick.

Over the next 100 years the home was well maintained and the historic elements were beautifully preserved. In 2003 the property was purchased by Gregory J. Alexander and Paul K. Williams. In an article about 2629 Guilford in Mason-Dixon Revival Magazine, Greg describes the property as the perfect blend of historic home with one that has just enough updates without sacrificing the historical details. Alexander and Williams worked hard to maintain the historical character of the home. They provided further updates to the kitchen, including the custom concrete countertops. Work completed on the ceiling of the front sitting room was featured on the HGTV show I want that! The front sitting room of 2629 was photographed for the ad brochure for the copper tin ceilings.

In the most recent time of ownership, the Kern brothers, have diligently added their own elements to 2629 Guilford. The rear yard features a blend of maryland native plants. Most recently, the home received a full paint job featuring specially selected paints from the historic color series by Sherwin Williams. The home's original hardwood floors have been restored and refinished in 2022 by a family of floor refinishers with decades of family experience. The kitchen features tastefully selected stainless appliances to compliment the hand made craftsman quality hardwood cabinets with recessed doors. New tile was added to the backsplash in 2022 to complete the craftsman quality of the kitchen. The kitchen also features space for dining and a wine refrigerator.

Other recent updates and improvements of note during their time of ownership include, a new boiler, and hot water heater system. Other improvements include, upgrades to whole house fan system, new lighting, electric upgrades, and roof work. All projects have been in keeping with the true spirit of this historic home.

This house has something to make every history buff smile. You will appreciate the laundry cute from the second floor bath to basement and the clawfoot tub! The embossed wallpaper stretches from the first to third levels of home and is even included in the back staircase. The period light fixtures on the second floor are beautiful and maybe original to home. Every bedroom has an original built in for storage which really makes the house feel s special. Many windows and the rear porch ad great light to this middle of the group rowhome. This is your chance to own a one of a kind home in a charming, friendly, and active neighborhood.
